About the project
Muharraqi Studios was commissioned to develop an updated visual treatment for the official crest of the Ministry of Interior, Kingdom of Bahrain. This was not an attempt to replace the historical identity with unrelated symbolism: the design retained the established elements and heritage of the Ministry’s previous emblem while bringing them together into a more unified, contemporary and durable visual system.
The intention was for the crest to feel like one coherent emblem, drawing on the formal character of traditional European-style heraldry while remaining distinctly appropriate to Bahrain and the Ministry. The work was developed in both 2D and 3D, so the crest could be evaluated not only as a flat graphic mark but as an institutional emblem that would need to work across physical applications.
Particular attention was given to the hierarchy of the existing symbols, proportion and balance, metallic and dimensional interpretation, clarity at different sizes, and application across uniforms, vehicles and institutional material. The studio designed the updated treatment; the Ministry’s historical symbols themselves were developed and unified, not invented.
Outcome
The updated crest was adopted and has since been used across Ministry applications, including uniforms, vehicles and institutional identity material — a long-term national identity the studio is proud to have contributed to.
